Kaufman’s Posographe

Appreciate your DSLR’s built-in light meter!

Here’s something to make you appreciate just how far we’ve come in a very short time; Kaufman’s Posographe.
What is it?  It’s a mechanical “computer” for calculating exposure, based on variables like camera settings, light and setting.  That’s right, in the old days, when people used plates and emulsion to create photographs, they did all their calculations by hand.  You could use this little device to speed up the calculations.  You could set it for aperture, time and other variables that we might not be quite as familiar with today, like “color of the wall” or “color of the floor”.  And for indoor photos, you could set how much light was coming in the windows.  For outdoor photos, the variables are a bit different.  They describe things like the setting (“Blue sky with a few clouds” or “Mostly greenery with some sky”) and the day and month.

So, the next time you go out shooting, appreciate the little, hand-held computer that takes photos for you.  And, enjoy your automatic white balance, variable ISO and exposure time.  Not to mention the little LCD that lets you see if your settings are giving you the result you want.
We’ve come a long way, baby!
